Day 4 - July 11, 2006
While Richard Gasquet, Gaston Gaudio and Jiri Novak advanced to the second round, public favourites Carlos Moya and Stanislas Wawrinka left the Roy Emerson Arena disappointed.

It is impossible to talk about yesterday without calling upon the big disappointment caused by the defeat of Swiss player Stanislas Wawrinka (ATP 69). Against Romanian Andrei Pavel (ATP 79) Stan disappointed. A single break was enough for the Romanian to win the first set on the score of 6/4 then, in the second set, the Swiss raised the level of his game and it is easily that he wins the second set 6/1. Then begins the third set in which none of the players gives up his serve. The set then evidently ends with a tie-break wich begins by the worst of ways for the swiss player with a double fault. It is finally the Romanian who takes the tie-break away, 7-4, he finally concludes on the score of 6/4 1/6 7/6.
The day wasn?t easy either for the seeds, as seed number 4, Paul Henri Mahieu (ATP 33) and seed number 5, Carlos Moya (ATP 42) are both out of the tournament. Last year?s winner Gaston Gaudio (ATP 14) showed some difficulties against Brazilian Marcos Daniel (ATP 89). The Argentine had to get to the tie break of the first set to really make the difference and finally be able to win 7/6 6/2. The only seed to have really been convincing was the French player Richard Gasquet (ATP 60) who easily got rid of the Germen Simon Greul (ATP 80) with a score of 6/3 6/3.
