Day 5 - July 11, 2007

An another rain-interrupted day at the Allianz Suisse Open in Gstaad, all the first-round-matches could be completed. The events of the day didn?t go well for the favourites as Number 1-seed Nikolai Davydenko lost to flamboyant Frenchman Gael Monfils in three sets.

Monfils captured the two remaining games in a match that was interrupted by rain with the two player?s level at 5 games apiece on Tuesday evening. Davydenkos Russian countrayman Mikhail Youzhny, the Number 2-seed bowed out as well to Austrian left-hander Stefan Koubek.

Much to the disappointment of the home crowd, Swiss favourite Stanislas Wawrinka lost in three sets to Argentine clay specialist Martin Vassallo Arguello. Wawrinka, who struggles after a knee injury, failed to convert on two set points in the first set and after leading with a break in the third.

French Wimbledon semi-finalist Richard Gasquet on the other hand disposed in two sets of Spaniard Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo. Gasquet, who moved up to Number 7 in the world after his fabulous Wimbledon run, didn?t have a chance to practice on a clay court before his game. He still feels tired after arriving in Gstaad only on Monday, but promised to do his best to defend his title from last year.
